The Limits of Influence

In my work as a consultant, I am often asked to support a process, review what exists and suggest ways to improve it. Yet there are moments when the process already feels rushed or decided by the time I am brought in. I may be asked to support something that does not fully fit or make sense from a local perspective. My input is accepted only when it stays within the limits of what is already decided and I am expected to endorse it.

I understand that some people-in-charge may have their own priorities or prefer to hold on to familiar ways. This lack of openness can make it difficult for consultants to add real value. When speaking to colleagues in the field, many described similar experiences and shared the same concerns.

I have seen people respond to this in different ways. Some choose to stay, set aside their expertise, and confirm what is expected from them. Others step away when they feel their role might help normalise what can be questioned. For me, there have been moments when stepping away felt more honest than staying in a role that no longer made sense or would compromise my professional reputation. Nevertheless, let us be realistic, how often do we really get to choose that route??

I learnt the importance of choosing those roles that allows real dialogue from the beginning. It is not always easy but it worth to join those who allow listening, questioning, and adjusting as part of the process from the start.
