Building Job-Ready Youth

My reflection today is on youth training programmes focused on skill building and job readiness. These programmes often emphasise technical skills, life skills, and mindsets. One area that could use more attention is how young people are supported to notice and apply the concept of quality in their work. I am proposing this because conversations with employers often suggest that readiness includes the ability to understand and apply quality in everyday tasks.

Working firsthand with young people of all ages, I often meet those who have not had the opportunity to explore this way of thinking through formal education, daily life, or at home. While families, schools, and training all contribute, training programmes should intentionally create space to practice quality thinking as an integral part of their design.

Simple, regular routines like reviewing work before finishing, comparing results with clear examples and reflecting on feedback in a constructive way can make quality easier to understand and apply.

Young people bring energy to learning and work. When quality thinking is included in their training, it supports their growth into confident adults who can excel in their own work, respond to feedback and contribute in jobs, entrepreneurial roles and in their daily lives.
